Panasonic Deep Tech Innovation Challenge 4 aims to identify high potential startups and SMEs to collaborate with Panasonic as technology adopters for its technologies. Panasonic is launching two challenges to search for partners that are able to adopt two of its technologies into their products: (i) "OZONE WATER" device for sanitization and decontamination, and (ii) Fast data transfer technology for autonomous vehicle and smart city applications.
Selected applicants may be given the opportunity to adopt Panasonic's technology and conduct joint POC with Panasonic.
Companies (startups/SMEs) in all sectors, such as food production and manufacturing, cleaning industry, autonomous vehicles and smart devices.
Open to discussing the possibility to adopt either technology from Panasonic.
What are the two Innovation Challenges?
"OZONE WATER" device for sanitization and decontamination
Ozone is a molecule consisting of three bound oxygen atoms which has an oxidizing power next to fluorine and is suitable for sanitizing and decontamination. It can be dissolved in water, which has high ozone molecular density and effectiveness. Ozonated water is easy and safe to handle and has low gas generation. Panasonic's proprietary technology uses a simple electrolysis method to make ozonated water directly from water, which allows for high dissolution efficiency and only requires low voltage. Its device is equipped with diamond electrodes that can generate ozone efficiently. Panasonic's "OZONE WATER" device has only a dimension of 153 x 22 x 32 mm and can be easily installed, incorporated into water supply facilities.
Problem Statement 1
How can we improve public health and facilities through sanitization?
In some parts of Asia, sanitation awareness is not sufficient when using public toilets, and dirty toilets are a problem. For example, Indonesia, which emphasizes international tourism, is concerned about the impact on tourism due to the large economic loss caused by inadequate sanitation facilities, and public health maintenance in tourist destinations is an issue. The realization of a hygienic environment will be an even more important issue not only in response to the growing global awareness of hygiene caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but also in terms of resuming tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ozonated water generation technology Panasonic has developed can produce ozonated water that is expected to have sanitizing effects without the use of any chemical agents. For example, using ozonated water automatically or manually on the toilet bowl surface and against toilet sinks, door handles, and utilizing it for cleaning, suppresses the generation of fungus-derived dirt. This system can be used to solve sanitation problems in public toilets. In addition, ozonated water will be converted to water after use, making it environmentally friendly to be disposed its waste in a safe manner.
Panasonic wishes to contribute to solving social issues with partners who are familiar with public health issues and can jointly develop units that incorporate devices and verify their effectiveness.
Problem Statement 2
How can we solve food spoilage through sanitization of raw food ingredients?
In parts of Asia, the food supply chain is not well developed, there is a lot of food loss from harvest to distribution and there is a lot of food loss. On the other hand, In Thailand, food safety and hygiene in the home are attracting attention due to the increasing awareness of health consciousness and cleanliness maintenance. Food hygiene maintenance is an issue for companies that sell meat and fish, vegetables and fruits and it will become an even more important issue as global awareness of hygiene increases due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Therefore, Panasonic aims to reduce food loss and provide safe and secure food for all by reducing the time and effort required to handle food ingredients to solve food sanitation issues in the distribution process. The ozonated water generation technology Panasonic has developed can produce ozonated water that is expected to have sanitizing effects without the use of any chemical agents. For example, a unit that produces ozonated water drips ozonated water over food surfaces to remove bacteria and pesticides. This reduces spoilage caused by bacteria, prolongs the freshness retention period, and contributes to reducing food loss. Furthermore, the use of sanitary collateral during food processing can be used to solve sanitation issues. In addition, ozonated water will be converted to water after use, making it environmentally friendly to be disposed its waste in a safe manner.

Problem Statement 3
How can we increase food production through sanitizing of food and agriculture products?
Singapore is pursuing its "30 by 30" initiative to increase its food self-sufficiency to 30% by the year 2030. In addition, food security has become an issue due to the stagnation of logistics due to COVID-19 and substantial investments are being made to achieve self-sufficiency. In Singapore, where land is limited, attention is focused on vegetable farms, which pose a challenge to more efficient cultivation by vertical farming.
Therefore, Panasonic aims to provide stable food supply at production sites and to provide safe, secure food for all by providing food care with less effort to solve production and supply issues. The ozonated water generation technology Panasonic has developed can produce ozonated water that is expected to have sanitizing effects without the use of any chemical agents. For example, by spraying ozonated water on vegetables, organic farming can be achieved, and by suppressing the growth of bacteria in the water of hydroponic cultivation, this can be used to improve production efficiency. In addition, ozonated water will be converted to water after use, making it environmentally friendly to be disposed its waste in a safe manner.

Fast data transfer technology for autonomous vehicle and smart city applications
Huge data collected in/by vehicles is increasingly being utilized. Hence, it is important to make high speed data transfer for vehicles convenient and affordable. Panasonic's propriety technology based on license-exempt, millimeter wave wireless LAN (mmWave WLAN) enables massive data collection from mobile entities (e.g. automotives) in cities.
The technology provides low-cost and high-speed wireless data transfer that is suitable for outdoor environments and makes it possible to collect large numbers of images of roads, waterways, etc. captured by the on-board camera of vehicles for detecting abnormalities by image analysis. It is also possible to consolidate data in a vehicle from external sources, such as an inspection robot with videos or images of public utility assets (e.g. sewage pipes), and transfer the data when back at base or at specific wireless hotspots.
Problem Statement 1
How can we enhance data utilization for smart cities applications?
As population density in urban areas increases, there is a need to create attractive cities where people can live comfortably. To meet this demand, smart city initiatives which utilize data are being implemented in various countries. These include initiatives for human flow detection and traffic congestion detection based on positional data from sensors and communication terminals, as well as crime prevention measures based on surveillance cameras. However, the utilization of data has been limited in existing solutions because the transfer of collected data typically relies on either cellular (e.g. 5G) communication, which uses licensed spectrum and could become expensive for high data usage, or wired communication, which is not suitable for mobile entities like automotives.
Panasonic desires to work with partners to utilize the communication and data transfer technology they have developed and further expand the scale of data utilization to create cities where people can live comfortably. Potential partners include equipment vendors (start-ups) who are developing onboard systems for vehicles or UAVs.
Problem Statement 2
How can we ensure smart maintenance of public infrastructures using technology?
In order to realize a sustainable society, it is natural to build and improve social public infrastructure such as roads, street lighting and sewage systems, and necessary to monitor and manage these social infrastructure safely, simply, and cost-effectively. This may be hindered by the lack of access to high-resolution, extensive and effective data for processing in existing smart systems.
Panasonic aims to work with partners to contribute to the creation of a sustainable society by supporting the maintenance of public infrastructure using their communication and data transfer technology. Potential partners include equipment vendors (start-ups) who are developing onboard systems for vehicles or UAVs and companies that provides infrastructure management systems that help efficient inspection and maintenance of public infrastructure.
